Fedcap’s Youth Services program provides services to youth, 17 to 22 years of age, with and without disabilities, in and out of school and targets those in need of transitional assistance, career guidance, and skill development leading to the world of work and independence.
The Program
Fedcap’s Youth Services program prepares at-risk youth with and without disabilities, ages 17 to 22, to manage the responsibilities associated with living mature, productive, and self-
sufficient lives through education, career exploration and vocational planning. Youth Services provides youth-focused skills training and ultimately entrance into the workforce.
- Vocational Assessment
The first step in Fedcap’s Youth Services program is for youth to undergo a comprehensive vocational assessment. This evaluation combines aptitude tests, computerized assessments, and vocational counseling. The evaluation takes into account the interests, abilities, and potential of each individual to be fully explored and serves to direct him or her towards an achievable and desired career path.
- Job Training & Educational Opportunities
Fedcap offers participants vocational training in its Rehabilitation Services Department and Career Design School, a licensed business and trade school. All vocational training at Fedcap focuses on an integrated learning approach, combining classroom instruction with hands-on learning. This approach leads to more successful outcomes and higher level of engagement for teens who have had limited success in traditional classroom-based learning environments. Fedcap offers vocational training in the following areas: Culinary Arts/Food Services; Data Entry/Document Management/Digital Imaging; Hospitality Operations; Office Skills; Security Operations; vocational English as a Second Language; Custodial Services; and Mailroom and Messenger Operations.
- The Power Hour Job Club
The Power Houor is a peer driven job/life readiness club. The Power Hour engages participants in visualizing a future where they are leaders in the workplace, making contributions to their community and making a difference in the lives of others. By engaging in this future-thinking environment youth will develop a deeper belief in their ability to actively shape their lives. The Power Hour provides a safe and inclusive environment for the young adults to gain greater insight into the life skills areas that will aid them in personal and professional development. During the Power Hour, members participate in activities and open discussions to maximize problem-solving ability, learn to make healthy decisions, and become responsible adults.
Workshops have included topics on money management, healthy social relationships, communication skills, legal rights, civic responsibilities, and career planning.
Monthly evening activities are scheduled to provide opportunities for youth who are working to continue to be involved in the program. Special events are also scheduled to recognize milestones achieved by members. Power Hour Job Club activities are planned by participants and include job-related focus groups, specialized workshops, and guest speakers offering relevant information geared toward the needs and interests of our members. Career Directions groups offer flexible schedules so that they are available to all program participants regardless of their training schedules.
- Girl Talk
Girl Talk provides an opportunity for female participants to have honest, open discussions about work-related issues, health and wellness, self-esteem, relationships, or any other topic, and to foster friendships.
- Working It Out
Working It Out provides follow-up support to participants after job placement. Workshop topics include budgeting, time and stress management, dealing with difficult supervisors and
co-workers, and how to achieve raises and promotions at work.
