Some Statistics:

  • Surveys have shown that people with a disability: on average, have a better attendance record, have an average or better productivity rate than other workers and have an average or better job retention rate. (Lester & Caudill, 1987; Noel, 1990; DuPont, 1981 & 1990

  • Turnover rates of for employees with disabilities are substantially lower than for those without (8% annually for people with disabilities vs. 45% overall in a study by Washington Mutual Insurance, and 20% vs. 150% in a study by Pizza Hut).

  • 15% of employers acknowledge that employer reluctance is the biggest barrier to employment for people with disabilities (Heldrich Center for Workforce Development, Rutgers University, 2003).

  • Most (74%) workers with disabilities do not require any special accommodations – and for those that do, most accommodations are inexpensive and easily obtainable (Job Accommodation Network)

About the Presenter
A senior Fedcap manager, Randy Shannon is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor with over 25 years in the field. He has been a vocational counselor, evaluator, and director at a variety of New York City rehabilitation agencies. Mr. Shannon is active in the NYS Rehabilitation Association, and served as a board member of the Metro NY Rehabilitation Association.
