On June 22 at the elegant Morgan Library and Museum on Madison Avenue, this year’s graduates of Fedcap’s vocational training programs were honored for their achievements at Fedcap’s annual graduation celebration.
300 students completed training programs in the fields of Culinary Arts, Custodial, Data Entry, Hospitality, Mailroom Services, Office Skills, and Home Health Care over the past year. Most of Fedcap’s students have significant disabilities or come from disadvantaged backgrounds that have kept them out of the economic mainstream. Fedcap’s vocational training programs help eliminate barriers to work by equipping all students with the in-demand skills they need to be competitive candidates for jobs in their chosen field. The capacity crowd of over 200 applauded the success of the 2010 graduates as they made their way across the stage and were presented with a diploma by Mark O’Donoghue, Chairman of Fedcap’s Board of Directors.
The 2010 commencement address was delivered by The Honorable Nicholas G. Garaufis, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of New York. Adina Johnson, Fedcap’s custodial supervisor at the federal building that houses the Judge’s chambers, introduced Judge Garaufis with heartfelt remarks about her personal journey with Fedcap and the support Judge Garaufis has given her over the years. This year’s student speakers included Home Health Aide Ericka Miller; Damien Minus, an Office Skills graduate currently employed as a data entry clerk at Fedcap; and Rafael Rivera, a Mailroom Services graduate.
During the ceremony a special presentation was made to Jose Gutierrez, the winner of the 2010 Usdane Award from the federal AbilityOne program that annually recognizes individuals with severe disabilities who have exhibited outstanding achievement and exceptional character. Mr. Gutierrez, who is deaf, has worked as a custodian for Fedcap at our contract site at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Historical Monument since graduating from Fedcap several years ago. Bob Sullivan, Executive Director for the NISH East Region, presented the award to Mr. Gutierrez on behalf of AbilityOne.
Another special guest who received an award was Iris Allen, a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with the Queens office of VESID (New York State’s Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities). Ms. Allen was presented with Fedcap’s Excellence in Vocational Rehabilitation award. She was chosen by Fedcap’s counselors for her dedication to her clients and creative approach.
