Networking by Design
A wide range of professionals helped underserved youth develop important job-search skills in a real-life setting at Fedcap’s inaugural Networking by Design event on Thursday.
The youth, who ranged in age from 16 to 22, met individually or in small groups with professionals who included members of the Fedcap Board and staff, representatives from Fedcap’s charity supporter nycTIES, and other guests. During each five-minute session, the young people presented the professionals with a brief “elevator pitch” about their backgrounds and career aspirations, which Fedcap staff helped them prepare in advance, and exchanged business cards.
The professionals provided gentle coaching and suggestions, and many offered to stay in contact with the young people they met to help with mentoring and career counseling.
The youth who attended are all participants in one of Fedcap’s Youth and Young Adult programs which include, for example, vocational training, specialized support for foster care alumni and NY Youth Works. For many, this was their first experience with the important art of professional networking.
